Developmental editing takes place early on in the editing process to get a wider look at a piece and assess if certain elements help in contributing to the bigger picture. It takes a project and evaluates its plot structure, character development, and how coherent the story comes across as a whole.

In a developmental edit, I will ask about what your main goals with your work are as an author, and help guide you on how to align your project with those intentions and best set up your story for success.

A manuscript evaluation is a brief review of your project from a broad perspective. Similar to a developmental edit, a manuscript evaluation will go over plot structure, character arcs, and pacing for a project in an early draft, but the edits will be less extensive and more broad. This can help you determine the main problems in your story before a full developmental edit is made, and can be done for some incomplete drafts as well.

The goal of hiring a sensitivity reader for a project is to ensure that appropriate care has been taken to represent marginalized or underrepresented communities in a work. For example: if a person without knowledge on the lives of disabled people is writing a work on a project that involves characters with disabilities, hiring a sensitivity reader would be beneficial to make sure that they are avoiding stereotypes and writing the characters in a respectful way.

I am able to offer these services specifically in regards to stories that feature characters with disabilities as well as stories with LGBTQ+ characters or themes.

On an hourly rate, I offer video discussions to work in real-time with writers regarding their work over Zoom, Discord, or Google Meet. These are one hour in length, and will go over your main goals for the project, your perceived strengths and weaknesses, and how to tackle areas where you might find yourself struggling with writer’s block. This service is available for projects before a first draft has been completed or in the pre-development process.
